Farm System Rankings: #30 St. Louis Cardinals

 
From 2001 until 2011, the St. Louis Cardinals had 71 of the 163 players (43.56%) examined  play at least one game at the Major League level. The Cardinals saw 61 players (85.92%) play for them while the other 10 spent time with one of the other thirty MLB clubs.

The Cardinals had two General Managers (Walt Jocketty 2001-2007, John Mozeliak 2008-2011), four Farm Directors (Mike Jorgensen 2001, Bruce Manno 2002-2006, Jeff Luhnow 2007-2010, John Vuch 2011), and three Scouting Directors (Marty Maier 2001-2003, John Mozeliak 2004-2005, Jeff Luhnow 2006-2011) over the eleven year time period examined.

Five Hits
1.      Albert Pujols, 1B: Is currently in his 11th season with the Cardinals and is one of the top players in the Majors. The 2001 NL Rookie of the Year has been a nine- time All-Star, six-time Silver Slugger, two-time Gold Glove winner, and three-time MVP.  To date he has 432 HR, 1295 RBI and a .328 career batting average. Drafted by the Cardinals in the 13th round of the 1999 amateur draft.
2.      Yadier Molina, C: The three-time All-Star has won three gold gloves during his eight year career. To date he has 49 HR, 365 RBI and a .271 career batting average. Drafted by the Cardinals in the 3rd round of the 2000 amateur draft.
3.      Dan Haren, RHP: The three-time All-Star was traded to the Oakland Athletics after the 2004 season for Mark Mulder (LHP). Although is time with the Cardinals was short (two seasons) he has gone on to have a very solid Major League career with the Athletics, Diamondbacks, and Angels. In his nine year career he has a record of 102-80 with a 3.58 ERA. Drafted by the Cardinals in the 2nd round of the 2001 amateur draft.
4.      Adam Wainwright, RHP: In 2009 he won 19 games for the Cardinals and followed it up with 20 in 2010. A member of the 2010 NL All-Star team. In his six seasons in the Majors he has a record of 66-35 with a 2.97 ERA. Is expected to miss the entire 2011 season following Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 1st round (29th overall) of the 2000 amateur draft. Was acquired by the Cardinals in December 2003 as part of a five player trade in exchange for J.D. Drew (OF) and Eli Marrero (C).   
5.      Jamie Garcia, LHP: The 25 year old made his Major League debut in 2008 with the Cardinals. In 2010 he posted a record of 13-8 with a 2.70 ERA. So far in his 3 year career he has a record of 24-14 with a 3.07 ERA. Drafted by the Cardinals in the 22nd round of the 2005 amateur draft. It appears that he has a bright future with his best years still to come. 

Five Misses
1.   Jim Journell, RHP: Pitched in 12 career games with the Cardinals in 2003 & 2005 posting a record of 0-1 with a 7.43 ERA. Made the annual top 30 prospect list 5 times and was the Cardinals top prospect entering the 2002 season. Drafted by the Cardinals in the 4th round of the 1999 amateur draft. Last pitched in independent ball with Bridgeport (Atlantic) in 2006.    
2. Anthony Reyes, RHP: In parts of four seasons with the Cardinals he posted a record of 10-24 with a 5.38 ERA before being traded to the Indians in July 2008 in exchange for Luis Perdomo (RHP). Was ranked as the Cardinals top prospect entering the 2005 season. Drafted by the Cardinals in the 15th round of the 2003 amateur draft. Currently on a rehab assignment with the Indians pitching with their Arizona League rookie team following elbow injury.
3.   Bud Smith, LHP: In 2001 he posted a record of 6-3 with a 3.83 ERA with the Cardinals finishing 4th in NL Rookie of the Year voting. In 2002 he posted a record of 1-5 with a 6.94 ERA in what was his last year in the Majors as his big league career was over before his 23rd birthday. Ranked as the top Cardinals prospect entering the 2001 season. Last pitched in independent ball with Long Beach (Golden) in 2007.  
4.   Chance Caple, RHP: Drafted by the Cardinals in the 1st round (30th overall) of the 1999 amateur draft. Never pitched in the Majors as the highest level he reached was Hi-A Palm Beach (Florida State) in 2004.
5.  Justin Pope, RHP: Drafted by the Cardinals in the 1st round (28th overall) of the 2001 amateur draft. Never pitched in the Majors as the highest level he reached was triple-A when he was a member of the Yankees organization in 2006 & 2007.
 
Five Current Major Leaguers on Other Teams
1.      Daric Barton, 1B, Oakland Athletics: Drafted by the Cardinals in the 1st round (28th overall) of the 2003 amateur draft. Traded to Oakland after the 2004 season as part of the package that brought Mark Mulder (LHP) to St. Louis. In his five year career he has hit 26 HR, 157 RBI and a .252 batting average.   
2.      Chris Narveson, LHP, Milwaukee Brewers: Drafted by the Cardinals in the 2nd round of the 2000 amateur draft. Traded to the Rockies in exchange for Larry Walker (OF) in 2004. In his 4 year career he has posted a record of 21-15 with a 4.62 ERA as a member of the Cardinals and Brewers. Currently in the Brewers starting rotation.
3.      Coco Crisp, OF, Oakland Athletics: Drafted by the Cardinals in the 7th round of the 1999 amateur draft. Traded to the Indians in exchange for Chuck Finley (LHP) in 2002. In his 10 year career he has 71 HR, 399 RBI, 202 stolen bases and a .277 batting average. He has played for the Indians, Red Sox, Royals and Athletics during his career.
4.      Rick Ankiel, OF, Washington Nationals: Drafted by the Cardinals in the 2nd round of the 1997 amateur draft as a pitcher. First made it to the Majors with the Cardinals in 1999 as a pitcher before losing his way. Returned to the Majors in 2007 as an outfielder with the Cardinals. In his 9 year career he has 61 HR, 204 RBI and a .247 batting average. As a pitcher he posted a record of 13-10 with a 3.90 ERA. He has played for the Cardinals, Royals, Braves and Nationals.
5.      Colby Rasmus, OF, Toronto Blue Jays: Drafted by the Cardinals in the 1st round (28th overall) of the 2005 amateur draft. In his 3 years with the Cardinals he hit 50 HR, 158 RBI, and a .259 batting average. Traded to the Blue Jays at the end of July 2011 as part of a seven player trade. The 24 year old is seen to have his prime years of production ahead of him.
Fun Fact 
In 2001, Chad Hutchinson (Right-Handed Pitcher) appeared in 3 games out of the Cardinals bullpen before heading to the NFL (National Football League) where he made 14 starts at quarterback with the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears between 2002 and 2004. Hutchinson was selected by the Cardinals in the 2nd round of 1998 amateur draft out of Stanford. He ranked as the 3rd best Cardinal prospect heading into the 2001 season.
