Farm System Rankings: #23 Pittsburgh Pirates

From 2001 until 2011, the Pittsburgh Pirates had 78 of the 169 players examined (46.15%) play at least one game at the Major League level. The Pirates saw 66 players (84.62%) play for them while the other 12 spent time with one of the other thirty MLB clubs.

1.      Andrew McCutchen, OF: The 24 year old made is first All-Star appearance in 2011.  His career batting average is .282 with 46 HR, 184 RBI, and 75 stolen bases over his three year career with the Bucs. He is the centerpiece of what could be an exciting Pirates team for years to come. Drafted by the Pirates in the 1st round (11th overall) of the 2005 amateur draft.
2.      Neil Walker, 2B: The 25 year old has spent three seasons in the majors as a member of the Pirates. His career batting average is .282 with 22 HR and 138 RBI. The local product came through the minors as a catcher. Drafted by the Pirates in the 1st round (11th overall) of the 2004 amateur draft.  
3.      Ryan Doumit, C: The 30 year old has spent seven seasons in the majors with the Pirates. His career batting average is .269 with 65 HR and 255 RBI. Drafted by the Pirates in the 2nd round of the 1999 amateur draft.
4.      Pedro Alvarez, 3B: The 24 year old is currently in his second season in the majors. His career batting is .235 with 19 HR and 79 RBI. Although he is not having a great 2011 season it is clear that he has all the tools to succeed at the major league level. Drafted by the Pirates in the 1st round (2nd overall) of the 2008 amateur draft.
5.      Paul Maholm, LHP: The 29 year old has spent seven seasons in the majors as a member of the Pirates. His career record is 53-73 with a 4.36 ERA over 185 starts. Drafted by the Pirates in the 1st round (8th overall) of the 2003 amateur draft.
Five Misses
1.         Bryan Bullington, RHP: The 30 year old is currently pitching in Japan with Hiroshima Toyo Carp. He made 26 appearances over five seasons in the majors as a member of the Pirates, Indians, Blue Jays, and Royals. His career record is 1-9 with a 5.62 ERA. Drafted by the Pirates in the 1st round (1st overall) of the 2002 amateur draft.
2.         John Van Benschoten, RHP: The 31 year old spent parts of three seasons in the majors with the Pirates. His career record was 2-13 with a 9.20 ERA over 26 games. He is currently pitching for Triple-A Tucson (Pacific Coast) in the Padres organization where he has posted a record of 1-4 with a 7.52 ERA after 5 starts. Drafted by the Pirates in the 1st round (8th Overall) of the 2001 amateur draft.
3.         Bobby Bradley, RHP: The now 30 year old last pitched in 2005. He never played in the majors following arm and shoulder injuries. Drafted by the Pirates in the 1st round (8th overall) of the 1999 amateur draft.
4.         J.R. House, C: The 31 year old was considered the Pirates top prospect entering the 2001 season. He played in 32 games over parts of five seasons as a member of the Pirates, Astros, and Orioles. His career batting average is .167 with 3 HR and 4 RBI. Drafted by the Pirates in the 5th round of the 1999 amateur draft.
5.         Yoslan Herrera, RHP: The 30 year old Cuban defector pitched in 5 games with the Pirates in 2008 (his only time in the majors), posting a record of 1-1 with a 9.82 ERA. Signed a three-year, $1.92 million major league contract prior to the 2007 season.

1.         Jose Bautista, OF, Toronto Blue Jays: The 30 year old has spent eight seasons in the majors as a member of the Orioles, Devil Rays, Royals, Pirates, and Blue Jays. The two-time All-Star has a career batting average of .255 with 149 HR, and 415 RBI.  Bautista is currently leading the majors in home runs as he attempts to defend his home run title from the 2010 season. Traded by the Pirates to the Blue Jays in exchange for Robinzon Diaz (C) in August 2008. Drafted by the Pirates in the 20th round of the 2000 amateur draft.
2.         Leo Nunez, RHP, Florida Marlins: The 28 year old has spent seven seasons in the majors as a member of the Royals, and Marlins. His career record is 18-19 with a 4.34 ERA and 89 saves. Traded by the Pirates to the Royals in exchange for Benito Santiago (C) in December 2004. Signed by the Pirates as a amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2000.
3.         Nyjer Morgan, OF, Milwaukee Brewers: The 31 year old has spent five seasons in the majors as a member of the Pirates, Nationals, and Brewers. His career batting average is .287 with 7 HR, 106 RBI, and 100 stolen bases. Traded by the Pirates to the Nationals along with Sean Burnett (LHP) in exchange for Joel Hanrahan (RHP) and Lasting Milledge (OF) in June 2009. Morgan is a former junior hockey player who played seven games with the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League(WHL) during the 1999-2000 season. Drafted by the Pirates in 33rd round of the 2002 amateur draft.
4.         Zach Duke, LHP, Arizona Diamondbacks: The 28 year old has spent seven seasons in the majors as a member of the Pirates and Diamondbacks. A member of the 2009 National League All-Star team. His career record is 48-74 with a 4.57 ERA. Traded by the Pirates to the Diamondbacks in exchange for Cesar Valdez (RHP) in November 2010. Drafted by the Pirates in the 20th round of the 2001 amateur draft.
5.         Matt Capps, RHP, Minnesota Twins: The 27 year old has spent seven seasons in the majors as a member of the Pirates, Nationals, and Twins. His career record is 28-28 with a 3.53 ERA and 124 saves. A member of the 2010 National League All-Star team. Drafted by the Pirates in the 7th round of the 2002 amateur draft.
Fun Fact
Pirate legend and Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente (OF) joined the club in November 1954 after being selected in the rule 5 draft from the Brooklyn Dodgers. Clemente was a fifteen-time All-Star, twelve-time Gold Glove winner, and 1966 National League MVP. He led the Pirates to two World Series titles (1960,1971).
