Farm System Rankings: #22 Oakland Athletics

From 2001 until 2011, the Oakland Athletics had 94 of the 178 players examined (52.81%) play at least one game at the Major League level. The Athletics saw 62 players (65.96%) play for them while the other 32 spent time with one of the other thirty MLB clubs.

1.         Rich Harden, RHP: The 29 year old has spent nine seasons in the majors as a member of the Athletics, Cubs, and Rangers. His career record is 59-36 with a 3.65 ERA. Traded by the Athletics to the Cubs in July 2008 in exchange for Josh Donaldson (C), Sean Gallagher (RHP), Matt Murton (OF), and Eric Patterson (OF). Resigned with the Athletics as a free agent in December 2010. Drafted by the Athletics in the 17th round of the 2000 amateur draft.
2.         Kurt Suzuki, C: The 27 year old has spent five seasons in the majors with Oakland. His career batting average is .258 with 54 HR and 274 RBI. Drafted by the Athletics in the 2nd round of the 2004 amateur draft.
3.         Trevor Cahill, RHP: The 23 year old has spent three seasons in the majors with the Athletics. His career record is 37-33 with a 3.88 ERA. A member of the 2010 American League All-Star team. Drafted by the Athletics in the 2nd round of 2006 amateur draft.
4.         Andrew Bailey, RHP: The 27 year old has spent three seasons in the majors with Oakland. The two-time All-Star has a career record of 7-9 with a 1.92 ERA and 69 saves. Drafted by the Athletics in the 6th round of the 2006 amateur draft.
5.         Cliff Pennington, SS: The 27 year old has spent four seasons in the majors with Oakland. His career batting average is .257 with 15 HR and 114 RBI. Drafted by the Athletics in the 1st round (21st overall) of the 2005 amateur draft.

1.         Jeremy Brown, C: The 31 year old played 5 games in the majors with Oakland back in 2006. His career batting average is .300. He last played in 2007 with Triple-A Sacramento (Pacific Coast) in the Athletics organization. One of the players discussed in Michael Lewis’s book “Moneyball”. Drafted by the Athletics in the supplemental 1st round (35th overall) of the 2002 amateur draft.
2.         Ben Fritz, RHP: The 30 year old spent nine seasons in the minors where he compiled a record of 45-58 with a 4.76 ERA. He had Tommy John surgery in 2004. One of the players discussed in “Moneyball”. Drafted by the Athletics in the 1st round (30th overall) of the 2002 amateur draft.
3.         Brad Sullivan, RHP: The 29 year old spent five seasons in the minors compiling a record of 10-14 with a 5.93 ERA. Last played in 2007 with Hi-A Stockton (California) in the Oakland system. Drafted by the Athletics in the 1st round (25th overall) of the 2003 amateur draft.
4.         Javier Herrera, OF: The 26 year old spent seven seasons in the minors where his batting average was .286 with 51 HR and 227 RBI. He last played in independent ball with Yuma (Golden) in 2010. Signed by the Athletics as an amateur free agent out of Venezuela in 2001.
5.         Richie Robnett, OF: The 29 year old spent seven seasons in the minors where his batting average was .257 with 75 HR and 340 RBI. He last played in independent ball with Camden (Atlantic) in 2010. Drafted by the Athletics in the 1s round (26th overall) in the 2004 amateur draft.

1.         Nick Swisher, OF, New York Yankees: The 30 year old has spent eight seasons in the majors as a member of the Athletics, White Sox, and Yankees. His career batting average is .254 with 180 HR and 567 RBI. He was a member of the 2010 American League All-Star team. Traded by the Athletics to the White Sox in January 2008 in exchange for Fautino De Los Santos (RHP), Gio Gonzalez (LHP), and Ryan Sweeney (OF). His father Steve was a catcher who played nine seasons (1974-1982) in the majors as a member of the Cubs, Cardinals, and Padres.  Drafted by the Athletics in the 1st round (16th overall) of the 2002 amateur draft.
2.         Joe Blanton, RHP, Philadelphia Phillies: The 30 year old has spent eight seasons in the majors as a member of the Athletics and Phillies. His career record is 73-62 with a 4.33 ERA. Traded by the Athletics to the Phillies in July 2008 in exchange for Adrian Cardenas (2B), Matt Spencer (OF), and Josh Outman (LHP). Drafted by the Athletics in the 1st round (24th overall) of the 2002 amateur draft.
3.         Andre Either, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers: The 29 year old has spent six seasons in the majors with the Dodgers. The two-time All-Star and 2009 National League Silver Slugger winner has a career batting average of .290 with 108 HR and 435 RBI. Traded by the Athletics to the Dodgers in December 2005 in exchange for Milton Bradley (OF), and Antonio Perez (3B). Drafted by the Athletics in the 2nd round of the 2003 amateur draft.
4.         Alexi Ogando, RHP, Texas Rangers: The 27 year old has spent two seasons in the majors with Texas. A member of the 2011 American League All-Star team, his career record is 16-6 with a 2.86 ERA. Was selected by Rangers from the Athletics in the 2005 rule 5 draft. He was denied access to the United States for five year after being involved in a human trafficking ring in 2005. Was converted from an outfielder to a pitcher by the Rangers. Signed by the Athletics as an amateur free agent in 2002 out of the Dominican Republic.
5.         Mark Teahen, 3B, Toronto Blue Jays: The 29 year old has spent seven seasons in the majors as a member of the Royals, White Sox, and Blue Jays. His career batting average is .264 with 67 HR and 330 RBI. Traded by the Athletics to the Royals in June 2004 as part of the three-team trade that sent Carlos Beltran (OF) to the Astros.  He was part of the much talked about Moneyball draft. Drafted by the Athletics in the supplemental 1st round of the 2002 amateur draft.
 Fun Fact
The book Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game by Michael Lewis challenged the thought process of traditional baseball scouting due to is higher emphasis on sabermetrics and an analytical approach to building a ball club. The Motion Picture is scheduled to be released on September 23, with Brad Pitt portraying Billy Beane.
